Trees That Speak
The practice of leaving “dendroglyphs” or tree markings was common to many tribes of the northeast woodlands. They would strip away the bark and paint hieroglyphics that could be read, such as the size of the group, where they were headed and even what success they may have had in battle or on the hunt.
