Could Be Shawnee

$26,000 SOLD

Oil on linen

28”x22”

During the later part of the 18th century and the Treaty of Greenville did little to curb the fears of settlers and those who worked and traded in the Ohio country.  Tecumseh and his Shawnee warriors would continue to work toward the unification of other tribes to take back the land that was lost in past treaties. The painting depicts that time of uncertainty.

The painting depicts a scene that would have taken place on the Great Lakes.  Storms would come up quickly with little warning.  I know firsthand from an experience I was involved in with my scout troop while taking a weekend canoe trip on Lake Erie.  A bad storm came out of nowhere leaving us little time to exit the lake.  Our canoes were violently tossed around in the heavy waves, and many took on water.  Eventually we were tossed on shore among the rocks; a miracle there were no serious injuries.  I don’t know what happened to the men in the painting, at least I know what they are going through.
