The Victor’s Gift to the Chiefs

Woodland people did not have a strong tradition of national flags or battle standards. Because they tried to remain concealed prior to battle, they often carried very little, if anything, to indicate their nation or tribe in war. A battle flag would have made a tempting trophy for enemies to capture.
