The Fragile Trust

Chance encounters on the frontier were always fraught with danger. To quickly establish a group’s intent was essential to survival. In 1775, Nicholas Cresswell and his party encountered a small flotilla of Natives on the Ohio River. Nervous, some of his party hid in the bottom of their canoe praying and the rest nearly fired unprovoked upon the Natives out of fear before the Delaware group hailed them in friendship.
