A defeated army commanded by a wounded General Braddock makes its disordered retreat, leaving behind a battlefield littered with spoils beyond any conqueror's wildest dreams. As the afternoon sun penetrates the dense canopy above, the victorious warriors weave between light and shadow selecting their rewards. Among the favorite prizes are the fine red coats of the 44th and 48th Regiments which now cover the battlefield, some carelessly discarded so that they would not hinder the British soldiers' panicked flight.

In addition to the artillery abandoned to the victors, the English lost everything they had with them save the clothes on their backs and the arms in their hands. One hundred oxen that had just been brought up; all the wagons, provisions, baggage, and stores; the military chest, containing 25,000 francs in specie; and the General's cabinet with his instructions and private papers fell into the enemy's hands.
