Detail taken from limited edition print, Unconquered

"Pure and simple, this is an image of one way of life in the process of being eclipsed by another; the Indians looking down at what is the beginning of a city and realizing that the English aren't leaving, as promised, but instead taking over. Watching this elaborate fort taking shape and the land around it turning into farms and settlements, the Indians had to know that the old ways were as good as gone. This is the first painting I did of Fort Pitt and, as would be the case with all of my paintings of the Point, it was really a challenge to find a good vantage point from which to get an unobstructed view. I finally found a spot in the present-day Pittsburgh neighborhood of Fineview that would become the ground from which these Indians would contemplate their suddenly complicated, unsettled future."
