As the American frontier pushed ever westward, trade was one of the most important aspects of the relationship between Indians and the Whites. Robert Griffing's painting "The Delicate Balance of Honesty" depicts a scene that no dought was repeated many times during the fur trade. For the most part, fur trade transactions were conducted honestly, but both were known to upset the delicate balance.
