General Louis-Joseph Marquis de Montcalm arrived in Quebec in May of 1756 to take command of all French regulars in Canada. His courage and bravery in battle endeared him to the Native Americans. In his painting, we see the Marquis as he meets with his allies near the French fortress Carillon on the shore of Lake Champlain. At this meeting, the Indians said that, "we wish to see this famous man who, on putting his foot on the ground, has destroyed the English ramparts. From his reputation and his exploits we thought that his head would be lost in the clouds, but behold You are a little fellow, Father, and it is in your eyes that we find grandeur of the loftiest pine tree and the spirit of the Eagle." Early in July of 1758, the Marquis gallantly defended Fort Carillon from an assault of a much larger British force. The French losses were around 300 while the English lost in excess of 1,500 soldiers.
